Both, neither and either

By Stu Leave a Comment

 both, neither and either

In this English lesson you will see learn how we use BOTH and EITHER and NEITHER in English when referring to two people or things.

We use both, either and either when we are talking about two people or things.

Here is an image of the easiest way to understand when to use each one:

 both and either

Let’s have a look at some example sentences.

I tried calling both Tina and Kate but neither answered the phone.

‘Would you prefer beer or wine?’ ‘I don’t care. Either one will do.’

‘Have you seen the Godfather parts one and two?’ ‘Yes. I have seen both those movies.’

What about Rocky one and Rocky two? No. I haven’t seen either of them or I have seen neither of them.

Either or neither

These two are very similar. Let’s look again at this sentence.

What about Rocky one and Rocky two? No. I haven’t seen either of them or I have seen neither of them.

If you have a negative verb = have not + either

If you have a positive verb = have + neither

Here’s another grammar lesson for you to study.
